Harmony Baptist Church exists for the glory of God. We are called to display his glory in the way that we choose to live our lives. At HBC, we desire to be a body that expresses his glory by being loving to everyone, relevant to our community, and, most importantly, centered upon Christ in everything that we do. We exist as an extension of His will into a broken world that needs his loving touch. This is a short summation of our basic theological beliefs.
THE BIBLE IS GOD’S WORD
We believe that the Bible is God’s Word. It was physically written by man, but every word was inspired by God and is by definition Truth. The Bible is authoritative in the life of every believer and the final arbiter on all issues. (Ps 19: 7-11, 2 Tim 3:16, 2 Peter 1: 19-21)
THERE IS ONE GOD
Scripture teaches that there is one God who is the creator of all things. He has existed for all eternity and will exist for the rest of eternity. He holds all things together. The one God exists in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Deut 6:4, Isaiah 46: 9-12, Jn 17:3, 1 Cor 8: 4-6, 1 Tim 2:5, Gen 1:26, Ps 45: 6-7, Ps 110:1, Matt 3: 13-17, Matt 28: 17-20, 1 Cor. 12: 4-6, Col 1: 15-17)
WE ARE ALL SINNERS
Scripture teaches that since the fall in the Garden of Eden, all of humanity (Jesus excluded) is by birth and action lost in sin. We don’t want this to come across as hateful, but we do want to be honest. Scripture teaches that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Therefore, we are all in the same boat. On our own we are without hope. (Gen 2: 15-17, Ps 51:5, Jer 17:9, Rom 3:23, Rom 5:8, Rom 5: 12-21, Rom 7:18, Eph 2: 1-3)
THE PENALTY FOR SIN IS ETERNAL SEPARATION FROM GOD
God is holy and just. Scripture is clear. The penalty for humanity’s disobedience is eternal death and all of humanity is accountable to God. (Gen 2: 15-17, Gen 3:19, Romans 5:12, Romans 6:23, James 1: 14-15)
JESUS IS THE HOPE OF OUR SALVATION
Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He was born of a virgin and walked the Earth physically. He was fully human and fully God. He lived a perfect life free from sin. His death on the cross was the substitutionary death that allows us to have a relationship with the Father and secures our eternity if we trust in him. Jesus physically rose from the dead conquering both sin and death forever. He then physically ascended into heaven. SALVATION IS THROUGH CHRIST ALONE
No matter how hard we try, we can never be good enough to earn salvation. It is a gift from our loving Father through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross that ushered grace into the world. Our works, whether we deem them good or otherwise, can never bridge the gap that sin brought into our relationship with God. Therefore, our only hope is to trust in Jesus as God’s provision for our disobedience. (Rom 10:9, Acts 16:31, Gal 2:16, Gal 3:8, Eph 2:8, Titus 3:5, Heb 9:22)
THE RETURN OF CHRIST
In God’s own time and by his own way, will bring the world to its appointed end. According the promise of his Word, Jesus will return to this world visibly and physically to judge humanity. Those who trusted in Jesus for their salvation during their time on Earth will be raised physically to an eternal reward. Those who have not trusted in Jesus will be raised to an eternal punishment.
